Review: Innisfree Bija Trouble Cleansing Gel
I will preface this review by saying that I have used this cleanser for about two years and am currently half way through my third bottle.
While the cleanser has a gel consistency that feels more like an oil cleanser, in performance it's like a foam cleanser. I don't wear makeup, so I can't comment on how well this will work as a makeup remover. However, I wear sunscreen daily, and to make sure it's properly removed I use an oil cleanser as my first step. I would also recommend this for others, particularly if you use makeup or sunscreen.
Ingredient list from innisfreeworld.com:
WATER, DIPROPYLENE GLYCOL, PEG-15 GLYCERYL ISOSTEARATE, PEG-20 GLYCERYL TRIISOSTEARATE, BIS-PEG-18 METHYL ETHER DIMETHYL SILANE, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, PEG/PPG/POLYBUTYLENE GLYCOL-8/5/3 GLYCERIN, TORREYA NUCIFERA SEED OIL(450mg), SALICYLIC ACID, CITRUS UNSHIU PEEL EXTRACT, ORCHID EXTRACT, CAMELLIA SINENSIS LEAF EXTRACT, CAMELLIA JAPONICA LEAF EXTRACT, DISODIUM EDTA, OPUNTIA COCCINELLIFERA FRUIT EXTRACT, ROSA CENTIFOLIA FLOWER EXTRACT, TOCOPHEROL, POLYSORBATE 20, PHENOXYETHANOL, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, FRAGRANCE
This cleanser has a pH of 3. Salicylic acid (BHA), which this cleanser contains, should have a pH level of between 3 and 4 to be effective, meaning it's right on track to be effective as a chemical exfoliant. However, a cleanser doesn't stay on your skin for a long period of time, meaning you won't get the full effect of an exfoliant. If you are interested in using active ingredients such as a BHA or AHA in your routine, I would recommend using a dedicated product for this.
However, a low pH is still a plus when it comes to cleansers. A high pH cleanser will disrupt your skin's acid mantle, and is often what causes your skin to feel tight and squeaky. This cleanser makes my skin feel clean, while still really soft and smooth.
It's hard to get a clear picture of the consistency of this product. It's completely colourless, and a bit thicker than water. When applied to your face and mixed with water, it doesn't foam up at all. Rather it behaves more like an oil cleanser. It does have a rather strong pine smell, which bothered me a bit the first few times, but not anymore. Be careful with this if you're sensitive to fragrance.
I have always struggled with breakouts and redness, but I have gotten it almost entirely under control. Honestly, I give this cleanser alone most of the credit for that. It has done wonders for my skin, and while I don't struggle with the same skin care issues as I used to, I will keep using this to maintain my skin
This is one of my holy grail products, and I would absolutely recommend it if you are struggling with redness or breakouts, or if you're just looking for a low pH gel cleanser.
